Design and Implementation of an IoT-Enabled Smart Street Lighting System for Energy-Efficient Urban Infrastructure

Abstract
The fast-urban infrastructure development requires smart and energy saving solutions, namely in public lighting systems. In this paper, we design and implement an IoT based intelligent street light system to overcome the drawbacks of traditional models and propose schedules and sensor-free light monitoring system. With a modular design approach, the proposed system combines a multiple input sources (e.g., PIR; LDR), adaptive light dimming controls, and communication protocols (e.g., ESP-NOW; LoRa) that can provide an intelligent and adaptive approach to control the street's light levels in response to environmental and presence information into a real-time street lamp dimming system. Remote login, fault monitoring and predictive maintenance can be achieved through one centralized monitoring screen, which reduces waste power reverting to the mains when it is actually unnecessary. The cloud integration is designed to facilitate active data logging and analytics for long-term planning. Results from an experimental big data testbed showed the proposed approach realizes up to 60% energy savings, while the reliability and public safety levels are satisfied. By countering the scalability, responsiveness and sustainability issues revealed from latest literature, this system represents a sound and affordable solution for next generation smart city illumination infrastructure.
